Tell Congress: Welcome Asylum Seekers, Stop Border Violence!
President Trump is attacking a humanitarian crisis at the border with military action against men, women and children seeking refuge.
On November 25th, 2018 US Customs and Border Protection closed the San Ysidro port of entry, between San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico. San Ysidro is one of the largest land border crossings, where more than 5,000 migrants have been waiting to apply for asylum in the United States.
The humanitarian situation at the border requires a compassionate solution, one that reflects the values of this country. Militarizing border communities and closing the border means turning our backs on vulnerable people with a right to seek asylum and it makes border communities less safe for those who use our ports of entry each day to conduct business and visit family.
Thousands of migrant families—mostly women and children—have been waiting to apply for asylum after making the treacherous journey from their home countries.
These families are seeking safety and the opportunity to have a better life for themselves and their children.
At our best, we welcome the stranger, just as we’ve done over the course of history. It is the right thing to do and we must demand that our elected leaders uphold our values and our constitution to make sure people seeking asylum have safe and timely access to have their cases heard.
